The camp is five miles west of I-77 from Exit 100.
Tour busses should plan to unload in the parking lot of the maintenance facility, located on the right side of Raven Knob Road just before reaching the front gate. If your unit plans to arrive in a tour bus, please let us know in advance so we can have staff there to assist with unloading and in-camp transportation of gear.
Yes, troops can arrive early. Please notify us of your plans at least two weeks prior to your arrival. Please keep in mind that no meals are served in the Dining Hall until Sunday dinner, so please plan accordingly.
The Bryson Inn at Flying J Truck Stop located at I-77 and Highway 89 is the closest. Also, the Hampton Inn off I-77 in Dobson. There are a number of other hotels in Mt. Airy.
The Northern Hospital of Surry County is located in Mount Airy approximately 17 miles away.
The nearest Wal-Mart is located on Rockford Street (Highway 601) in Mount Airy.
The city of Mount Airy has a lot to offer. There are great restaurants and a welcoming Main Street. There is a nice Museum and plenty of Mayberry themed gift shops. Mount Airy is also home to the North Carolina Granite Quarry, the largest open-faced granite quarry in the world. Also, no trip to Mount Airy is complete without a visit to Robby's Sales (if they don't have it, you don't need it!) and Snappy Lunch (their pork chop sandwich is legendary!), both located on Main Street.
Coverage varies depending on equipment and wireless network providers. Carolina West and Verizon have the best performance, Sprint has some coverage, and AT&T and T-Mobile have little, if any, coverage. To compensate for this, each unit is issued an two way radio during the check-in process for reliable contact from camp throughout the week.
The camp provides free WiFi for leaders that need to stay connected. Connections can be found in a majority of the common areas throughout camp, including the Administration Building, Dining Hall, Program Center, and Trading Post.
